DIY: Rhinestone Skeleton Hand Brooch

This quick DIY probably goes under the category of "creepy/cool" - you also may have spotted this brooch in my last post. As I've mentioned in the past, I have a tendency to mix unexpected concepts together...Making not-so-pretty things into pretty things.

A few months ago I came across this skeleton hand brooch by DSQUARED. Original price is $820, sale price is $492. Even with the red Swarovski crystals, it's still a good chunk of change!

The one I made looks like nothing like the piece above, but it was inspired by it nonetheless. I was wandering around a party supply shop and spotted some plastic skeleton hands in the Halloween section. I instantly thought of this $800+ $400+ brooch, and this DIY was born.

Supplies:

- Plastic skeleton hand
- Pinback
- Super glue
- Flatbacked rhinestones (I used clear)
- Metallic spray paint (I used gold)

Come Halloween, you'll probably have an easier time finding plastic skeleton hands at party stores, Party City, dollar stores, etc. I'll be sure to re-post this in October! Until then? Try Ebay, Etsy, or the general internet. I'm sure online party suppliers should have some.

1) Spray paint and let dry.

2) Glue on the rhinestones however way you'd like. Using a super glue tube with a pointed tip helps with precision. Then, glue on the pin on the back.

P.S. A really awesome DIY coming by the end of this weekend...going along with my apparent trend of using rhinestones/rhinestone trim. It's a different version of a past DIY, but way cooler.

Plus...lots of exciting news as the next few weeks go by!

xo,
kirsten

  4. LOVE THIS. I am obsessed with statement jewelry and like a small child, have to force myself to not wear all my pieces at once.

  15. My 15 yo granddaughter is Goth inspired - lol. She's not allowed to go totally off the wall but she does what she can. When I can find the stuff, I'm definitely going to make this for her but I think I'll spray the hand black and use some pink rhinestones. She'll flip with happiness. Thanks for posting.
